A feast of cuteness
Yesterday, I made this for April:
It's a little felt house for her (very tatty and much-played-with) peg dollies. I saw it on another blog (will dig out link) and just thought it was soooo sweet! It's not nearly as perfect as the one the other lady made but I'm pretty pleased with and April is thoroughly enjoying it!
Today, April was excited again as the postman delivered these that I just brought:
Bento boxes! :) These are basically Japanese lunch boxes. Now, as we Brits know, in this country the "traditional" way to pack a lunch is to sling everything into a Tupperware box together, perhaps with the sandwiches wrapped in clingfilm so they end up good and sweaty *shudders*. The Japanese packed lunch is an altogether more dignified business with all the food being served in little bitesize pieces and put into specially designed boxes so that the food is kept separate and there is no need for damp clingfilm. The boxes are much smaller than our usual lunchboxes and you have several - slightly bigger ones for pasta salad and sandwiches and little diddy ones for things like yoghurt or chopped up fruit. You can see in the top pic how the larger boxes have built in dividers to keep the food separate.
The other thing about bento is the totally gorgeous way the food is arranged (sometimes to ridiculous degrees). I just loved this idea of cutting stuff up and making it look cute for the kids :) Here are a couple of examples (not mine - I'm still waiting for my egg mould and cutters to arrive from Japan!):
...and look at these Mario ones! Told you some of them were ridiculous! I prefer the top 2 as the food is better separated.
April already insisted I put her tea in a box today *laughs* - she's very excited about the idea of shaped sandwiches and bits of carrot. I'm probably a bit sad but I find it adorable - food art ;)
Oh, on a different note, Rosie FINALLY finished her medieval lapbook (been going on for months that one!) - will post piccies tomorrow. We're about to embark on making a castle out of old cereal boxes to finish her studies ... should be interesting ...
