Website headaches

Finally emailed Nik-the-web-man today about my new site - took a while because I was umming and aahing between 2 different possible names. Anyway, decided now and just waiting to hear back from him.

In the meantime, I've been playing around with logos, choosing graphics and designing the front page. Aaaargh! What a nightmare! It's quite complicated because I sell a lot of different educational materials - I've got my Montessori things (maths, English, Science, Geography, History and pre-school), a dedicated preschool section (not necessarily Montessori) and my (non-Montessori) other materials for maths, English etc which will all be organised seasonally. That's a BIG listing to go in the sidebar menu and I had to find a way to incorporate it all but still keep the front page looking neat and uncluttered. So, I came up with a solution and presented it to Tim. Now, I can do a lot of the page coding myself but not one particular thing I wanted ....

I showed him my scribbled piece of paper and said "does this make any sense to you?" to which he replied "ummm ... erm... yeah ... but..." *frowns and looks a bit more closely*.....

"Oh no! not drop down menus ..... noooooo!"

I take it this means he doesn't want to make drop down menus.

Well, I'm having them so there :P

Between all this I'm continuing to go through EVERY materials I've ever made and proof-read, alter fonts if necessary and just generally get them shop-ready.

When it's all done, I'll get rid of the Lulu store because I won't need it any more - very excited! :)

Bye, bye for now!

Poorly!

Poor Tim is ill with the cold again .... AGAIN! Actually, I think it's the same one and it sort of faded into the background and then resurfaced. It's been exacerbated by the fact that his yearly hayfever has started so he's sneezing with that too. Has got his prescription for his medicine from the doctor so, hopefully, that will be controlled soon.

Not much that can be done about the cold though - I expect, by the time he goes to work on Thursday, he'll have lost his voice again!

I've done a little work today (on shop-related things) but not much because I've had other stuff to do as well. I'm actually quite fed up with the rain now thanks very much - really, BADLY need to get out for a nice long walk somewhere and whilst I appreciate that walking is still possible in the rain, I don't think Tim could handle that with his current poor health.

And for something completely different - I heard this the other day and haven't for AGES! Great song - brought back memories of being a teenager :)

Going boggle eyed

Been spending too much time today working in Photoshop on the shop logo - the worst bit is getting all the letters the same height (I'm using individual letter graphics) and spaced correctly - so many layers! *groans*.

Apart from that I've been tidying up and getting Tim's clothes ironed because he has to be off to the lovely Iford URC tonight for the Easter service. So, smart shirt and trousers it is - 'bout the only time I see him in smart clothes!

Oh and hey! here's good news - since I started my healthy eating/less eating/more exercise thing I've (gasp!) lost weight! Ok, I wasn't exactly fat to start with but now I'm even smaller :) At only 5'2" I just cannot carry that extra weight. Only problem is I'm now constantly yanking up my jeans because they've got too big!

Shop and silliness

I've decided I'm going to get on a do a website for my Montessori materials shop. I'm not going to go the route of doing a free one first I'm just going to find out from Nik how much it will be to set up another website and then, hopefully soon, do it.

My materials do sell well but they're not "out there" enough - when I've sold on Ebay and Lulu they've done really well, just not well enough for my liking! It's not enough just to make "pocket money" any more - my materials are very good and past customers (which have included homeschoolers AND schools) have always complimented me on them ......... it's time to think bigger and reach more people with them. I've just got to do some alterations on them and set the fonts - I want to offer two and do Sassoon Primary which is used in a lot of British schools (I brought this font AGES ago especially for that purpose!) and a Montessori script for those who want more traditional looking Montessori materials. So, I've got some work ahead .... time to put on my geeky glasses and get on with it *laughs*.

So that's that bit of exciting news today :)

Have pulled myself together now - the last couple of days have been difficult and I've felt sluggy and a bit down but you get to the point where you have to say "to hell" with situations, things and people don't you? However, I was still a little like that when Tim got home prompting April to say "daddy, mummy's got the bluey-blues" to which he replies "erm... what are the bluey-blues?"

"They're when you're too sad to do ANYTHING!"

Oh dear.

I probably have had the bluey-blues over the last couple of days but certainly pulled myself together and got a grip on myself now! I got very sad over the money/HB situation and related things to do with that but, at least partly, the decision to work on my shop has boosted my mood again.

Anyway, the comment about the bluey-blues led on to other silly stuff (we have daft conversations like this sometimes). I was relaxing on the sofa and the kids started playing with my feet (NO! I don't make them do it, it's entirely voluntary - personally, I can't think of anything more sick making but there you go). Rosie looks up and says "do you know, there's a fish that eats your dead skin?"

Me: "eh? what?"

Rosie: "really! You put your feet in a bowl of water and they put the fish in and they eat your crusty feet!"

Me: "I see .... how gorgeous" (Bleeeurgh!)

She then goes on to say "also, there's some country where the women wash their husbands feet and then drink the water"

Me: "now you're telling me fibs!"

Rosie: "nooo! I'm not, honestly!"

At this point I had to tell Tim not to get any funny ideas because he was smirking. Frankly, I'd rather stick a straw down the outside drain and slurp that up (believe me, I actually did do just that when I was about 3 so I know what it tastes like!) than go anywhere near his revolting feet (especially when they've been in his manky old work boots all day!)

*Feels faint at the thought*

As if all that wasn't bad enough, April then pipes up with "there's a lady in London who EATS people!"

"No, April, no there isn't" I tell her and April just howls with laughter and replies "that lady bloody eats people she does!"

Whoops (ashamed mummy!) ........ she picked up that word from me ....

So, tomorrow I shall get to work on the materials ... get them ready for the shop - oh, if anyone has any suggestions for materials they'd like to see in the shop (I know some homeschooley/school people DO read this blog as well as the other one), then please do email me and let me know - email addy - info (@) sarahsellers (dot) co (dot) uk (in the sidebar also) ... for now, I'm going to have tea :)

Rain!

Honestly, the rain is a nightmare - it's been raining since Sunday and just doesn't seem to want to stop :(

I didn't do much today - had a bit of a funny tummy ache all day (not that a tummy ache can be funny but you see what I mean!) Tim's just taken April off to Rainbows and then, later, he's off to church and won't be back to around 9.00 which means a couple of hours of free time for me because the kids will be packed off to bed :)

This is short and sweet today! Bye bye!

Sleepy

Waiting for dinner to cook ..... having a glass of wine .... just a little bit irritable and frustrated for some reason ..... just a little bit sleepy.

Early night I think :)

Night, night.

Lunch!

Been doing "stuff" this morning - felt the need to be busy if you see what I mean?! Ever get like that? Where you need to focus - stop your mind from wandering ;) Anyway, apart from general housework things (laundry, tidying), I've been looking over the possibility of setting up a proper website for my educational materials. It occured to me that, actually, I do pretty well with them - just not consistently and that's because they're sort of hidden mostly. I'm proud of the fact that, over the last couple of years, virtually all the homeschool materials and books I've purchased for the kids have been brought with my own earnings rather than going to Tim for money. I don't have a problem asking for Tim for money, it's just nice to be able to contribute myself and, to an extent, be my own person.

Now, the website this blog is on was, originally, set up for just that purpose (hence my "info @ email addy - seems a strange one for a personal site!) BUT it kind of got overtaken by blogs and other things and didn't work as a "selling" website any more. So, I think a new website especially for them would be in order but I think I may start with a general, free, site to start with and then transfer at some point in the future to their own domain (once I've found out from Nik-the-web-guy how much it would cost!)

So that was my morning :) Going to have lunch now and then do a few more things and get Tim's work clothes ready for him tomorrow (wayhaaay! Tim going to work = me actually getting stuff done!)

Good for sleeping on it

Feeling less stressed over the HB issue now having had time to reflect a little. There's nothing we can do about having to pay back the money - luckily they're taking back a bit a week so it's not going to hit us too hard.

The more irritating thing is trying to figure out how to prevent it happening again next year and, having ... er... reflected, it seems there's not a lot that can be done. The only possible thing would be to keep the overtime down to a minimum but that then means missing out on the extra money. It's hugely annoying - the overtime money is SO welcomed and SO needed at the time but, ultimately, we end up losing out in the end because they reduce the benefit - it iS really unfair. Surely, they should be encouraging people to work more by letting them keep extra earnings without saying "oh, I see, you did some overtime! Well, we can't have that can we, we'll have to cut your benefit". It doesn't encourage people and it isn't fair. They are very good at his work and do give him overtime when it's available so we do get that lovely extra money which we obviously really appreciate but .... *sigh* .... rotten benefits system!

Still that, as they say, is life and there is nothing we can do about it. If I worked it would be easier because with the sort of work I'd do (office stuff), I'd work more regular hours. Unfortunately, Tim, by his own admission, could not cope with teaching the kids (because he has this weird "thing" whereby he feels because he knows something he can't understand why his pupil can't! It's the same when he's taught piano!) so that job falls on me at this stage. I say at this stage because who knows what will happen in the future - they COULD go to school (certainly, the idea of Rosie going to upper school in a years time, when she reaches the right age, HAS been tossed about on occasions).

I do still have my little Lulu store with my educational materials but that cannot in any way be counted as income - it's pocket money essentially. Now, I could make something more of it I'm sure but I don't really know where to begin. Things sell fairly well on there but, to be honest, they probably need their own dedicated website so that I can really market them properly and that's not something I can do at the moment I don't think.

Anyway, better get on with my day :) Not sure what's going on today but I know Tim has to take Rosie to the orthodontist tomorrow morning. Couldn't tell you what they're doing - she is having a fitted brace at some point (got a removable one at the moment) so maybe they're doing that.

Have a lovely day honeys :)

Damn

Remember I wrote the other day that the housing benefit said they had overpaid us by £90? Well, they've changed their minds apparently. We had another letter today saying that we owed them £648.

Perfect.

Setting a good example

Behold! Recycling pigeon!

I was in the kitchen this morning, making tea for Tim in an attempt to get him out of bed (although, to be honest, I think probably this   would be more effective.... I'm a real early bird and his reluctance to get out of his pit in the morning drives me potty.)

However, I digress. There I was making the tea when I heard a big thump and looked up out the window. There was a pigeon which had landed in the old pigeon nest which we found last autumn and it was picking it to bits! When it found a (presumably suitable) twig, it flew back to it's nest site and then a few minutes later returned for some more at which point I got a little video of him :)

He has a good old rummage around trying to find just the right bit of twig!

Family tree on hold

.... at least for today as I was busy doing other things. Hmm, so much for Sunday being a "day of rest" - certainly wasn't for me!

I've hoovered - twice because Hemmy is moulting and driving me absolutely bats by dropping his fur everywhere, put mountains of laundry away, stuck together paper daffodils (that me and April made and painted yesterday) to put on the nature table (strangely, we don't have any real daffodils in the garden this year, normally they pop up on their own year after year), cleaned the rabbit out and repotted all my seedlings - here they are in their new homes :)

I've got sunflowers in the 2 trays at the front, various, butterfly/bee attracting wildflowers (cornflowers, poppies etc) top left and tomato plants top right. I've also got a garlic growing elsewhere. This is a slightly nerve wracking time because, generally, plants don't like being moved but I had no choice because they were outgrowing their old accommodation! I hope they survive! I still want to plant some carrots, chives and lettuce so will need to buy some more seeds.

Tim made some scones for tea - normally my job but I was busy with the rabbit - very nice they were too :)

Now, finally, got the kids off to bed and going to relax, have dinner and watch Wonders of the Solar System ... lovely!

Heavens! It just gets better and better

Ok, still trawling through my (increasingly bizarre) family history. I've now located my grandfather's brother, a one Walker Aquilla Hardy and another Aquilla Hardy who I haven't linked to anyone yet but am assuming is a relative given the unusual name.

Then, looking for more info on Walker I find a Cornelius Parrott Hardy ......... mmmm. My grandfather was called Cornelius so there's possibly a connection. Now, one Cornelius Parrott would be bad enough but it appears there is 2 - Sr and Jr. A whole flock of parrotts *laughs*.

One thing that is becoming apparent through this little exercise is that my family, apparently, had a thing for weird names.

So, who do I think I am?

I'm beginning to wonder!

I've been really getting into that programme on telly (Who Do you think you are?) - I'm really fascinated by family trees so I decided to try and trace some of my own. I made a start today and got my immediate rellies down - see? :) You have to squint a bit!

... the dotted lines between people mean they got divorced.

So far, I've got me (and Tim and the kids obviously)- my dad Terry and mum Gloria. My 2 brothers James and Gavin. James' ex-wife Kathy and their daughter Saffron. Gavin and his girlfriend Linzi and their son Jaydn and both sets of my grandparents (all dead) and this is where the fun starts. I've been browsing the free BMD for people further back and I'm looking on my dads side of the family. I've got my grandad (Cornelius John - or Jack as he called himself) but after that it all gets a bit hazy - guess I'm going to have to talk to daddy!

Oh, but I did find Spearmint. Dear Spearmint - my dad told me about him a few years back and I actually didn't believe him until I looked it up. Come on! no one calls their kid Spearmint?! Oh but they do or at least they do in my weirdy family! He was born in 1906 and died in 1972 when I was just 2 years old. Spearmint would be a BAD name now, never mind in 1906!

Dear god, what were his parents thinking?!

I'll tell you what. Some members of my distant family were heavily into horse racing (in fact some even owned race horses). Spearmint's family were some of those horsey lovers and so they, in their wisdom, decided to name their first born after the horse that won the Derby that year. Not the jockey you notice (which would have been more sane) but the HORSE! Tim said "erm, maybe the jockey had a really silly name too". What, MORE silly than Spearmint?! Could that be possible?

Here he is :) Nice horse ...

I've got to try and work out Spearmint's relationship to my grandad - I think he might have been a cousin.

I'm having such fun - wonder what other crazy rellies I'll uncover! *laughs*

PS - just done a search for the jockey of Spearmint - he was called Danny Maher. Now, they couldn't have called him Danny could they (Spearmint's parents)? Naaa! That would have been waay too weird.

*Sulk*

Where did the sun go?! It's rotten yukky today - drizzle ALL day :(

Not only did I have to contend with the weather BUT also a hideous HUGE spider that I discovered lurking in my bathroom at 7.00 this morning. It was above the loo but tucked into the corner so there was no way I could catch it in a glass and the only way to remove it would have been to poke the thing and make it run and THEN catch it.

No flipping way am I poking a spider.

So it sat there all day (didn't move a bit!) until Tim came and then I made HIM poke it with a stick and catch it ... good plan no? *laughs*

We were going to go to the shops when Tim got home - general shopping and some new shoes for me - but the weather was so dire that we decided against it. So I've had a stuck at home day and did nothing more than work with the kids, do a load of washing, ponder the idea of revamping my website (again) and then decided not to and wonder what the hell "error logs" are in my ftp folder ......

Still, looking on the bright side ..... the spider is gone, we've got yummy shepherds pie for dinner, it's officially spring in 2 days time (and only about 2 months away from Springwatch on telly and .....ooooo!.... Chris Packham!) and I think I might do some baking of some kind tomorrow (which ALWAYS makes me feel good).

I think I might have got away with it

.... the yukky cold virus that's been doing the rounds that is. After April, Rosie and Tim having it, I fully expected to be the next to be struck down but SO FAR so good. Tim has only just recovered and got his voice back after going round sounding like an adolescent boy for about a week (if you see what I mean!)

I'm really quite surprised - I usually get everything going!

Well, we had some good news (she said sarcastically) from the housing benefit department this morning. Regular readers may recall that I mentioned a while back how they got in a state about Tim's earnings (because they go up and down all the time) and how he had to send a years worth of payslips for them to reassess his benefit entitlement. Well, he duly did that and this morning we got a letter from HB saying that we have, apparently, been overpaid by £90 which we've now got to pay back. Lovely. Now, ok, £90 probably isn't a huge amount to some but it's a fair bit to us and it's massively irritating to have to have to pay it! When Tim went in to work and spoke to the wages woman about whether there was any way that the problem with the pay/housing benefit could be got round, the best she could come up with was "would it help if you were paid monthly?" Erm... no. In what possible way could that help?

Sheeeesh!

It's a good job Tim and I can retain a sense of humour sometimes!

Anyhow, got to go ... finish tea and then Tim's off to church this evening for a choir practice and I've got to get the kids in bed and have some quiet time. Late dinner though because he's out - doesn't get back to around 9.00ish!!

Not clever

I hurt myself this morning. I went to get out of bed and (somehow) managed to pull all the muscles down one side of my neck ... bloody-ouch-hell. I had a long soak in the shower and has helped some but I'm very stiff and having to constantly remember not to move too suddenly and when I look round I have to turn my entire body rather than just my head.

Not sure how I managed it ... stupid me.

Anyway, I noticed something today - I've got loads of visitors to this blog from so many different countries now! So, hello to those of you in....

The Netherlands

Belgium

Michigan, USA (and a few other places in the US besides!)

Germany

Ontario, Canada

Spain

Hong Kong

Portugal

Romania

Australia

Ukraine

India

Wow! :)

Bit late in the day with this but ...

....to mummies everywhere :)

Was it good for you? Was good for me - breakfast in bed, LOADS of cards all made by the kids (looking at the row of cards along my dining table, you'd think I had 50 kids!) Lovely roast lunch and a glass of wine then off to Tim's mums for tea and cake :)

Of course, the day didn't pass without my thoughts turning, briefly, to my own mother - the poison little dwarf who gave me so many years of misery. I haven't seen her for many, many years and probably never shall again. It always makes me a little sad that she had to be that way and ruin our relationship and so, today, Tim caught me staring a little sadly out the back window. I told him I was a bit sad because I didn't really have a mum to wish happy mothers day to and he said, never mind, it's for the best this way because she made you so miserable ... you can share mine. *Laughs* very sweet eh?

Anyway, that episode only lasted a very short time - the day was happy otherwise - weather good again :)

Going to watch the next episode of Wonders of the Universe again tonight - don't miss it! It's really good :)

Here comes the sun ....

.... and I say it's VERY alright.

It has been gorgeous today and the temperatures have very noticeably gone up (hence April running around outside with no cardi although I don't think it was QUITE warm enough for that!) I got my washing hung outside for the first time in aaages and then went out with the camera and snapped away. Behold!

Run! Run! (please excuse the poor state of our lawn!)

Flowers and sweet little leaf buds *sighs happily*

Hemmy stalking something in the bushes - he's hardly been out over the winter, I imagine he probably enjoyed a bit of sunshine in his old bones :)

Aaaaah! Looking a lot (scarily) like her daddy in this first picture!

Art, telly and gardening

Despite ongoing sicky-ness, we've packed a fair bit into the last couple of days. Yesterday was utterly gorgeous weather wise and April and I spent AGES hunting (quietly!) for in-progress birds nests in the garden. We stared for a long time at our resident pigeon flying backwards and fowards ALL morning with twigs in it's beak. We've also got blue tits in the bird box in between April's and Rosie's bedroom windows which is sweet :) The kids decided (eeek! a bit of homeschool stuff slipping in here!) to make maps of our garden and start plotting where birds are building nests - this is largely so that they can go back in the autumn and locate the now empty nests and investigate them!

Today (noooo! more homeschool mentioning!) Rosie was studying Picasso in art and she drew, in pastels, a Cubist portrait (hers will be on the homeschool blog if you want to look). This looked like a bit of fun so I had a go to - here is my (rather lame) effort *laughs* - the neck is too skinny and the yellow side of the face is far too "sloped" - I think there should be a gentler angle upwards and off the paper. Oh well, it's good to be creative sometimes even if it does turn out shabby :D

I started watching a new series on telly - The Wonders of the Universe (9pm BBC2, Sundays) - Empire of the Sun was the first episode and it was totally amazing! The bit with the total eclipse of the sun was incredible! If you want to watch it you can still catch the first episode on BBC iplayer for another month.

Due to the increasingly better weather (although today was a bit rubbish) and the leaf buds popping up everywhere and the crocuses on our lawn, I've gone all garden-minded :) So, today, we went to our local garden centre and came back with 2 bags of compost and a tub of plum tomato seeds. I've also got various flower seeds and herbs to plant so I think me and the kids will get started on those tomorrow or the next day.

Very sicky

Not been about (blog wise) for a few days - been nursing the sick pretty much - and spring cleaning.

Just as April was recovering from her hideous virus, Rosie came down with a slightly less severe version of it. Then, just as she was (is!) recovering from it Tim got ill. Actually, I didn't realise that Tim felt ill until yesterday morning because he never mentioned it to me. He left for work at the usual time 4.45 ish (am!), I got back into bed and fell asleep. Then, about an hour later i was woken up by a knocking and I lay in bed thinking "eh?" and not sure if I imagined it or not. Then there was another knocking and I started to panic because I wondered who the hell was knocking on my door at quarter to 6 in the morning! Then the phone rang and it was Tim and he said "hello, I'm outside would you let me in please?!" Oh. Ok then.

So in he came and told me that he felt really ill.

You want to know something really stupid? Before he told me that he felt ill, I had no idea and no idea why he was home again. Did I think "oh my god he's been sacked!"? No. Did I think "oh my god, the car broke down!"? No. Did I think "oh my god, he's ill!"? No.

The first thought that popped into my head was "oh my god, maybe the warehouse burnt down!". What?! Well, I was half asleep! *laughs*

So anyway, Tim got up, left the house at 4.45, went for a little drive to Christchurch, told the work people he felt crap, drove home again and went back to bed!

Today our landlord came to visit. He lives up north somewhere and all the years we've lived here we've never met him. He was down visiting his parents so he'd thought he'd pop in and whilst he was here he measured the kitchen because, apparently, he's thinking of having a new one put in sometime. Lovely! It's a really badly designed, hideously old kitchen so a new one would be very welcome - he also said he'd design it in such a way as to create space for our fridge/freezer which is currently in the dining area! Oooo!

So that was that. Tomorrow afternoon Tim and his sniffles are going off to the church because he has a rehersal for the Easter service - lucky them - hope they don't get his germs!

The great gnome races!

We have these little gnomes which have ball-bearings in so that when you put them on the top of a slope they tumble (head over heels) down to the bottom. To anyone with no sense of humour or fun this might sound rubbish but it really makes us laugh!

We've had the little gnomes for ages but today Rosie decided to try and make a really big one out of a toilet roll tube so we did and here he is next to his smaller brothers :)

Then, Rosie took a few bits of video, from different angles and put them together in one film (with some funny music!) and the result is everso funny *laughs*. Here you go:

Muddy walk

Gorgeous weather today (after a fair bit of rain recently) so we took our sickly (ok, not THAT sickly but a bit "coldy" still) children for a walk in Christchurch along the river. It was pretty flooded down by the quay and there were a lot of aggressive looking swans hanging about menacing everyone.

Then we walked along the footpath at the side of the river, up to the ruined castle, climbed the steps, admired the view and came back down again (sliding about in the mud). We'd brought some bread so we fed the ducks and one VERY friendly swan who virtually ate from our hands. He was all by himself so we came to the conclusion that he'd been ousted by the other swans for being too wimpy *laughs*.

Rosie collected a lot of swan feathers and when we got back the kids stuck them in their nature books.

Nice day :)

Butterflies for Spring

This is a little post to show (one) reason why I couldn't have short hair - I just LOVE doing cute stuff with it :)

Today, in honour of the fact that it's a) sunny and b) not freezing cold, I've gone all springtimey and done a messy bun decorated with little sparkly butterflies (there are 2 - one each side). You can't see that they sparkle but they do :)

I do love messy buns - takes a lot of work to get my hair into a "neat" bun simply because there's so much of it - I had to twist it round several times just to get it this contained! Messy buns are more doable ..... and cuter.

Oh, and here's an "April-thing" for you. Today I was doing some work with her on rhyming words and she had a little poem in her workbook that she had to complete by thinking of a rhyming word. The poem had the lines:

"My favourite foods are cheesy bake

And treacle tart and chocolate ........."

When asked to come up with a word that was suitable and rhyming, she said STEAK! Chocolate steak?! Mmmm, yum.

Going now ... lunchtime - not chocolate steak though - Coronation Chicken :)
